Heerema Marine Contractors and AF Offshore Decom were awarded a contract in October 2018 by Marathon Oil Decommissioning Services for the Engineering, Preparation, Removal, and Disposal (EPRD) services of the Brae Bravo Platform. Marathon was later taken over by RockRose, which in October 2020 handed the operatorship over to their partner TAQA.
Engineering and planning started in 2019, and the first preparatory work was performed in 2021. All topside modules, the flare jacket, bridge, and the main jacket, totaling approximately 48,000 tonnes, were transported to AF Environmental Base Vats for disposal/recycling between 2021 and 2023
First removal project for TAQA
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) is one of the largest listed integrated utility companies in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The Brae Bravo removal campaign was the first major asset removal project for TAQA, and as a late-life asset operator in the UK, safety and environmental impact principles are at the center of the project for TAQA and its partners.
The Brae Bravo platform, first commissioned in 1988, was removed over three separate phases in 2021 and 2022.
“TAQA Europe is embarking on one of the largest decommissioning exercises in the North Sea to date. The size and scale of the platform, including the topside structure, almost the height of the London Eye"
